HOA’s Role in Advancing Iran’s Healthcare System | Part 2

When Hope Came Home
Today, thousands of Iranian couples begin infertility treatment without ever leaving their country. Fertility clinics, advanced laboratories, and highly skilled specialists are now an established part of Iran’s healthcare system. But this was not always the case. There was a time when advanced infertility treatment meant travelling abroad. For many couples, the journey was financially impossible and emotionally overwhelming. The dream of becoming parents depended not only on medicine, but also on the ability to cross borders. Recognizing that this was not a sustainable future, a different strategy emerged. Rather than continuing to send patients abroad, Iran chose to bring the science, technology, and expertise home. The Board of Trustees for Foreign Currency Savings in Patients’ Treatment (HOA) played an important role in this transformation. Alongside supporting the acquisition of advanced technologies, HOA invested in the most valuable resource of any healthcare system—its people. Iranian physicians and specialists were supported to train at leading international centers, returning home with the knowledge and experience needed to establish advanced infertility services in Iran. Technology was transferred. Clinical expertise was developed. Specialized centers were established. A new generation of healthcare professionals was trained. What began as an effort to reduce the need for overseas treatment evolved into something much greater: the creation of a sustainable national capability. Today, Iranian fertility centers are recognized for their expertise, serving not only patients from across the country but also many from neighboring nations. It is a powerful reminder that the true value of technology transfer is not measured by the equipment installed—it is measured by the knowledge retained, the expertise created, and the lives transformed. The lesson remains relevant today. Lasting healthcare progress comes from investing in people, strengthening institutions, and building capabilities that endure. Because the greatest success in healthcare is not sending hope across borders. It is bringing hope home.
